Players take on the role of five Hobbits—Merry, Pippen, Fatty, Sam, and Frodo—on their quest to destroy the One Ring. They must work their way through four boards, cooperating to overcome challenges and prevent the Ringbearer from being corrupted. As the game progresses Sauron moves toward the fellowship and certain events can cause the Hobbits to corrupt and move towards Sauron. Whenever a Hobbit meets Sauron he is corrutped and out of the game; if the Ringbearer becomes corrupted the game ends. The Fellowship can call upon Gandalf for help or risk using the Ring - which may lead to further corruption.

The Lord of the Rings board game is a unique and original game in which players must work together to defeat the game itself, a daunting task that will challenge even the most experienced players. In the Lord of the Rings Trivia board game, each player, or team of players, takes on the role of Frodo Baggins and seeks to destroy the One Ring by throwing it into the fires of Mount Doom. As the players travel through 14 areas of Middle Earth they must spend precious resources and answer challenging questions.

Each player controls nine characters who each have a unique special ability (the nine characters of the Fellowship are controlled by one player, and nine of Sauron's greatest minions are controlled by the opposing player). The game uses a hidden movement system to simulate the search for the ring, and the conflict resolution system is a brilliant cardplay mechanic from a limited resource pool of cards. The dark lord Sauron is stronger and projects more power, but the Fellowship have more devious and surprising maneuvers at hand. The straight-forward gameplay of The Confrontation allows each game to be played in about a half hour. Great strategy and fun.

What is new in the Deluxe Edition?

In this edition you will not only be able to play the original classic game, but also play an entirely new variant game with new characters found on the reverse side of the character tiles. Furthermore, you will also be able to play a “draft” version of the game in which players may select characters from either the original version or the variant game. Finally, the Deluxe Edition also includes four new Special Cards in addition to the four Special Cards found in the original release.

In summary these are the new elements of this edition:

• A variant game using the 18 new characters found on the reverse side of the classic character tiles.
• Rules for playing a draft game. The included character tokens may be used as visual reminders for which declared mix of characters your opponent is using in the draft game.
